Benchmark Z-VAD 2026 radar data

Abstract:

Dataset contains idealized radar velocity data in NetCDF format that were developed for the Zebulon Leffler Velocity Azimuth Display (Z-VAD) project in the summer of 2026. Detail: Each data file contains azimuth (degrees) and range (meters) dimensions. These data files were constructed to mimic a NEXRAD Level-II data file converted and output by the LROSE RadxConvert package. Each file contains typical elevation angles or sweeps included in a NEXRAD RadxConvert data file. The only difference is that the original velocity field data (Edc_VEL) has been replaced with an idealized radar velocity field for a variety of Doppler velocity scenarios highlighted in Browning and Wexler (1968). The Edc_VEL field in each idealized radar velocity file is the field users should use to run the RadxEvad or Z-VAD retrieval codes. A variety of background wind fields, Doppler velocity patterns, and magnitudes of atmospheric divergence or deformation are contained to provide users with a variety of idealized fields to test.

Data processing: The data files were constructed using a Python script that users can use to create a background wind profile, add divergence/deformation, or specify what kind of wind field (diverging, deforming, translation) they want to build.

Citation counts are compiled through information provided by publicly-accessible APIs according to the guidelines developed through the https://makedatacount.org/ project. If journals do not provide citation information to these publicly-accessible services, then this citation information will not be included in GDEX citation counts. Additionally citations that include dataset DOIs are the only types included in these counts, so legacy citations without DOIs, references found in publication acknowledgements, or references to a related publication that describes a dataset will not be included in these counts.
