Getting Started

This page will help you understand how datasets are organized, how to find what you need, and how to choose the right access method.

Data Organization

Every dataset page includes:

  • Overview (summary, citation, documentation)
  • Products / groups (how files are organized)
  • Variables / parameters
  • Data Access options (subset, GLADE, web, Globus)

Each dataset contains:

  • Products / Groups -broad categories (e.g., fields, resolutions)
  • Variables / Parameters -scientific variables you can select
  • Files over time - e.g., daily, monthly, or hourly files
  • Metadata & documentation - what the data means and how to use it

How do you want to access data?

Get a subset (recommended for many users) – Download only the variables and region you need.

Web / HTTP download – For simple file downloads through your browser.

Access via GLADE (NCAR/UCAR only) – For internal users working on Derecho/Casper.

Globus – For large/bulk transfers.

THREDDS – For programatic data access.

  • Global Search - Best for known dataset names or keywords. Example: “ERA5”, “temperature”, “ds633.0”
  • Browse by Category - Best for exploring without a dataset in mind. Example: “Surface” or “Reanalysis”

Search within a Dataset Page - Find parameters, variables, or groups once you’ve found a dataset. Supports subsetting, filtering, and reviewing metadata.
