Metadata fields describe the minimal and optional metadata fields required for a dataset.

Field Name Field Definition Required? Usage Recommendations
Title A name given to the asset. Yes Be descriptive such as including geographical, temporal, and spatial information.
This field value is used in the suggested citation provided by GDEX.
Description A paragraph or two that provides the summary (i.e. who, what, where, when, why, and how) of the asset Yes Consider placing in description specific words and phrases that the users will be searching for.
Contact information for the asset should be provided using the "Resource Support Contact" field.
Short Name This information is used in GDEX URL of the asset. Yes This field is assigned by the GDEX curator.
Version The version identifier of the the asset. Yes Semantic version is recommended. See semver.org for more information.
Author The person(s), group(s), or institution(s) receiving credit for the asset. Yes A person's name should be provided using the following format: [Full Last Name], [Full First Name] [Middle Initial if desired]
This field value is used in the suggested citation provided by GDEX.
Publisher The person(s), group(s), or institution(s) receiving credit for the asset. Yes All GDEX assets are published by GDEX.

Yes The GDEX Curator will provide metadata support for all GDEX assets.
Resource Support Contact The person(s), group(s), or institution(s) providing support for the content of the asset. Yes At the minimum, a contact email address is required.
Legal Constraints Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License Yes All GDEX assets use this license per Terms of Use for UCAR/NCAR Data.
Access Constraints Terms and conditions that the users need to meet to gain access to the asset. Yes
Language eng; USA Yes This is the initial value used for GDEX.
Temporal Range (Begin Date, End Date) The date/time period covered by the asset. Yes, as applicable The date/time information needs to be described using the ISO 8601 format, e.g. YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SS (where "T" is a connecting character; Time is optional).
Temporal Resolution The interval of the time series. Yes, as applicable E.g., one hour, one day, one month, one year.
Latitude Range (northernmost, southernmost) The northernmost and southernmost geographic positions covered by the asset. Yes, as applicable The range of latitude is [-90, +90] degrees.
Longitude Range (westernmost, easternmost) The westernmost and easternmost geographic positions covered by the asset. Yes, as applicable The range of longitude is [-180, +180] degrees.
Spatial Resolution Density of the asset's spatial data within the coverage area. Yes, as applicable
Science Keyword(s) Subject words that are commonly used to describe the asset. No Currently, the Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) terms are used.
Related Links A resource that is associated with the asset and is citable via an URL or a persistent identifier. No
